Barcode scanners: if it types, it works

Almost every retail barcode scanner sold in India ships in keyboard-wedge mode, also called HID mode. The scanner does not need a driver or vendor software — it behaves exactly like someone typing the barcode digits very fast, followed by an Enter key. Nidhi Inventory works with any USB or Bluetooth scanner that emits keystrokes this way, and the billing screens are built scan-first on both desktop and mobile.

That is why a scanner you already own is almost always fine. The compatibility question that trips people up with installed desktop software — driver versions, COM port settings, a vendor utility that only runs on one Windows build — does not arise, because the browser is receiving keystrokes rather than talking to a device.

For a small counter this changes the maths. A Bluetooth scanner in the ₹1,500–₹3,000 range paired to an Android phone you already have is a working scan-and-bill till. You are not buying a billing PC to run the software on.

Thermal printers: Bluetooth straight from the browser

Nidhi POS prints to a Bluetooth thermal printer directly from the browser using Web Bluetooth. There is no cable to the till, no print server running on a back-office PC, and no desktop agent to install and keep updated. You pair the printer once and print from the same screen you billed on.

It prints two things, not one. Receipts are the obvious case — a GST-correct bill handed over at the counter. The same path also prints stock and price stickers, which is what a shop actually needs when new stock arrives and every item has to carry a scannable label before it reaches the shelf.

The practical consequence is that the till is portable. A staff member can bill from a phone in an aisle, at a delivery point or at an exhibition stall and still hand over a printed receipt, because the printer is paired to the phone rather than wired to a fixed counter.

Where the browser approach has a real limit

Direct Bluetooth printing needs Chrome. Web Bluetooth is implemented in Chromium-based browsers on Android, Windows, macOS and Linux, and it is not implemented in Safari or in any browser on iOS and iPadOS — every iOS browser is required to use WebKit, and the WebKit team has stated it does not plan to support the API. So an iPhone is a perfectly good device for raising invoices, checking a party balance or looking up stock, but it is not the device to pair your receipt printer to. Put the printer on an Android phone, an Android tablet or the counter PC.

A cash drawer that kicks open on print, a weighing scale that pushes weight into the bill line, and a customer-facing pole display are not capabilities we claim. Some counters genuinely depend on them — a kirana selling loose goods by weight, for instance. If yours does, ask at [email protected] before you subscribe rather than after.

Hardware also does not remove the connection requirement. A paired Bluetooth printer still needs 399Apps loaded, and that needs a network — mobile data is enough. If you bill somewhere with no network at all, the answer is a self-hosted deployment on a local PC or LAN, not a different printer.

Who this fits — and who should check before subscribing

If you run a retail counter, pharmacy, garment or electronics shop that already owns a barcode scanner and a Bluetooth thermal printer, 399Apps fits because that equipment carries over unchanged — you are replacing the software on the counter, not the counter. Adding a second till means pointing another phone or PC at the same login, with no extra per-device licence and no second hardware purchase.

If you are opening a new counter with nothing bought yet, this also fits, and it is the cheaper starting point: a Bluetooth scanner and a 58mm Bluetooth thermal printer paired to an Android phone or tablet you already own is a complete till, with no billing PC and no proprietary terminal in the quote.

If your counter depends on an integrated cash drawer, a weighing scale feeding weight into the bill, or an iPhone-only setup where the same iPhone must also drive the receipt printer, do not assume it works — write to [email protected] and confirm first. And if you bill in places with no network at all, look at self-hosting on a local machine rather than at hardware.
