Free GSTIN validator and decoder

Short answer

Paste a GSTIN below and the tool checks it instantly, in your browser, with no signup. It verifies the MOD 36 check digit, looks up the state code, extracts the PAN and decodes the entity type — and nothing you type leaves your browser.

What each part of a GSTIN means

A GSTIN is 15 characters, and every position carries information. When you validate a number above, the tool breaks it down — here is what each part tells you.

Position Characters What it is
1–22 digitsState or union territory code (01–38)
3–1210 alphanumericPAN of the entity — 5 letters, 4 digits, 1 letter
3–53 letters ↳ Surname/name initial (individuals) or first three letters of the entity name
61 letter ↳ Entity-type code: C = Company, P = Person, F = Firm, H = HUF, T = Trust, etc.
71 letter ↳ First character of the first name (individuals) or entity name
8–114 digits ↳ Serial number assigned by the Income Tax Department
121 letter ↳ Alphabetic check character of the PAN itself
131 alphanumericEntity/registration number under this PAN in this state (1 = first, 2 = second, etc.)
141 letterDefault character, currently always Z (reserved for future use)
151 alphanumericCheck digit computed by MOD 36 from the first 14 characters

GST state and union territory codes

The first two digits of every GSTIN identify the state or union territory where the registration is held. There are 36 active codes plus two special codes (96 for foreign countries and 97 for other territory). Code 25 was retired when Daman and Diu merged with Dadra and Nagar Haveli under code 26.

Who this validator is for — and who should skip it

Use it if…

  • You received an invoice and want to spot-check the supplier's GSTIN for typos before entering it.
  • You are onboarding a new vendor and want to confirm the GSTIN structure before your first purchase.
  • You are a CA or accountant and need to quickly decode a GSTIN's state, entity type and PAN.
  • You are building a system that accepts GSTINs and need to validate the format before saving.
  • You do not want the GSTINs you are checking sitting in someone else's server log.

Skip it if…

  • You need to confirm that a GSTIN is actually registered and active — that requires the GST portal's Search Taxpayer feature, not a format check.
  • You need bulk validation of hundreds of GSTINs against the portal — that is an API integration, not a browser tool.
  • You need your billing software to auto-validate GSTINs as invoices come in, match them to your GSTR-2B and flag mismatches at filing time. That is billing software, and ours is ₹399 a month with unlimited users.

FAQ

Questions people ask about GSTIN validation

Does this GSTIN validator actually check the number, or does it just look at the length? +
It checks more than the length. It verifies all five components of the GSTIN: the 2-digit state code against the official list of 36 states and union territories, the embedded PAN structure (5 letters, 4 digits, 1 letter), the entity-type code in the fourth letter of the PAN, the reserved 14th character (must be Z), and the MOD 36 check digit in the 15th position. A wrong digit anywhere — even a single transposed character — fails the checksum.
I pasted a GSTIN and it says the check digit is wrong — does that mean the GSTIN is fake? +
Not necessarily. The most common cause is a typo — one transposed or misread character (O vs 0, I vs 1, B vs 8) changes the check digit. Copy the GSTIN directly from an invoice or the GST portal rather than retyping it. If the number was copied correctly and still fails, the GSTIN may have been issued under a different checksum variant or may genuinely be incorrect — verify it on the GST portal (services.gst.gov.in) for a definitive answer.
Is the GSTIN I enter sent to any server or stored anywhere? +
No. The validator runs entirely in your browser: it transmits nothing you type and stores nothing — no server, no database, no log. Close the tab and the input is gone. This is deliberate, because a GSTIN is a business identifier and there is no reason it should leave your browser for a format check.
Can I use this to verify whether a GSTIN is actually registered and active on the GST portal? +
No. This tool validates the format, structure and check digit of a GSTIN — it tells you whether the number is correctly formed. It cannot tell you whether the GSTIN is registered, active, suspended or cancelled, because that requires a live query to the GST portal. For registration status, use "Search Taxpayer" on services.gst.gov.in.
I run a small shop and check supplier GSTINs before every purchase — is a validator enough, or do I need software for this? +
For an occasional check — verifying a new supplier or spotting a typo on an invoice — a validator is fine. If you are checking dozens of GSTINs a month and also need to match them against your purchase register and GSTR-2B, that is billing software territory: it keeps the supplier list, auto-matches GSTINs to invoices, and flags mismatches at filing time rather than at data entry.
What is the MOD 36 check digit and why does it matter? +
The 15th character of every GSTIN is a check digit computed from the first 14 characters using a MOD 36 algorithm prescribed by the CBIC. It catches single-character errors and most transpositions. If you change any one of the first 14 characters, the check digit changes. This is how a validator detects a typo without needing to query the GST portal — the number does not add up.

Billing software that validates GSTINs as invoices arrive

A validator checks one GSTIN at a time. 399Apps keeps your customer and supplier list, auto-fills the GSTIN on every invoice, and flags mismatches when GSTR-1 and GSTR-2B are due — flat ₹399 per month per app, unlimited users, cloud or self-hosted.
