Amount in words converter — rupees in lakh and crore

Short answer

Write rupee amounts in words using lakh and crore, not million: ₹1,50,000 is "Rupees One Lakh Fifty Thousand Only". Paise come after "and", and "Only" always ends the line so nothing can be added. Type any amount below to get the cheque and invoice wording, in your browser, with no signup.

  • No account, no email
  • Offline after first load
  • No data sent anywhere
  • Lakh, crore and paise

Commas are fine. Up to two decimal places for paise.

How the Indian system groups digits

  • The last three digits are hundreds: 1,500 → One Thousand Five Hundred.
  • After that, digits go in pairs: thousand, lakh, crore — 1,25,00,000 → One Crore Twenty Five Lakh.
  • 1 lakh = 1,00,000 = 100 thousand. 1 crore = 1,00,00,000 = 100 lakh. 10 lakh = 1 million.

FAQ

Questions people ask about writing amounts in words

How do I write ₹1,50,000 in words on a cheque? +
Write "Rupees One Lakh Fifty Thousand Only". Start right after the printed word "Rupees" (or write it if the line is blank), use lakh and crore rather than million, and end with "Only" so nothing can be added after it. Then draw a line through the unused space.
How do I write paise in words — for example ₹1,499.50? +
Write "Rupees One Thousand Four Hundred Ninety Nine and Fifty Paise Only". The paise go after the rupees with "and", and "Only" still comes last. If there are no paise, leave them out rather than writing "and Zero Paise".
Should I write lakh and crore, or million and billion, on an Indian invoice? +
Lakh and crore. Indian cheques, invoices and receipts use the Indian numbering system: 1,00,000 is One Lakh and 1,00,00,000 is One Crore. Ten lakh is the same number as one million, but an Indian bank or buyer will expect it written as "Ten Lakh".
Does a GST tax invoice have to show the total in words? +
Rule 46 of the CGST Rules lists what a tax invoice must contain, and the total in words is a long-standing convention printed on almost every Indian invoice format. It guards against someone altering the figures. Our free GST invoice generator and Nidhi Books invoices print it automatically.
Is the amount I type sent to a server or saved anywhere? +
No. The converter runs entirely in your browser. It sends nothing you type anywhere and stores nothing — no account, no cookie for the amount, no log. Close the tab and the number is gone.
I write the amount in words by hand on every invoice — is there a way to stop doing that? +
Yes — billing software prints it for you. Nidhi Books prints the total in words on its GST invoices, along with the CGST/SGST or IGST split, and builds GSTR-1 from the same invoices. It is ₹399 a month with unlimited users.
